Conde Nast is a monster in the world of magazine publishing, attracting more than 164 million consumers across its 19 brands and media.  So, when they decided to test the Hasselblad X1D-50c, we sat up and took note.

The Hasselblad X1D-50c is a 50MP mirrorless, medium-format camera and is an important product for the iconic Swedish company.

With a long history of making high-end cameras, Hasselblad has been the gold standard of professional cameras for decades (they were even used by astronauts on the moon).  It’s boxy 6 x 6 format cameras were loved by generations of photographers.

The decline of film and changes of ownership have seen the company undergo many changes.  But, the X1D is the move that is most exciting, as it fits well with the brand’s history and strengths.  The purpose of the Conde Nast testing was to see how the digital world of photography has changed Hasselblad cameras.  This is what they had to say.

The Camera

  • compact, sturdy design
  • weighs only 725g, making it easy to carry long distances
  • 5 interchangeable lenses
  • shoots raw capture, 65-110MB,
  • large, detailed images
  • intuitive touch screen for easy adjustments
  • “mirrorless large sensor medium format”

Testing was completed on the streets of New York.  The tester, Matt Hranek, commented that the Hasselblad had a  “very nice fall off (the moment the background drops out of focus in the shot) with open f/stops so you can choose your focus—great for portraits and that editorial feeling. The compression of the lenses is cinematic and beautiful, something I’ve missed while shooting on 35mm digital cameras and lenses.”

Opinion

The Hasselblad has definitely kept up with the times, and more importantly has evolved along with the times.  The Hasselblad is for serious photographers who want images far better than even the best smartphone can provide.  Hasselblad’s X1D-50c is extremely versatile, providing gorgeous landscape images, as well as close-up, personal portraits.

Hasselblad quality remains top-notch.  If you are looking for a camera that will give you the best possible image quality you can get in a portable form factor, then you won’t get any better than the Hasselblad X1D.
